Grill’d – The Gamechanger
Grill’d – The Gamechanger has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Eco Innovation in The Australian Brand Awards 2023. The Australian Brand Award for Eco Innovation [ECO] recognises environmentally conscious products that offer a point of difference from their competitors.
Grill’d is a privately Australian-owned casual dining restaurant chain specialising in guilt-free, healthy burgers. Founded by Simon Crowe in 2004 in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Grill’d now has more than 150 restaurants across the country and one in Indonesia, with plans for further international expansion.
The company’s brand promise is to make healthy burgers for a healthier planet. Since its foundation in 2004, Grill’d have approached the casual dining industry by providing nutritious food sourced locally, with an emphasis on sustainability. Grill’d consistently championed positive change in the casual dining/fast food industry, from serving healthy, 100 per cent natural burgers to an extensive plant-based menu, using RSPCA-approved chicken, free range eggs, and buns baked daily with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives all sourced from local suppliers. A core focus for Grill’d is progressive and sustainable farming, promoting a more sustainable and ethical future and healthier eating habits.
In Australia, agriculture represents 14 per cent of carbon (CO2) emissions, 10 per cent of which comes from livestock. Most of this is derived from methane (CH4) production, which has a global warming potential 28 times that of CO2. In October 2022, the federal government signed the Global Methane Pledge, joining more than 100 other countries in a commitment to cut methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030. Against this backdrop, in February 2023, Grill’d launched its world-first sustainable, grass-fed beef Gamechanger pattie. The ‘Gamechanger’ is a beef pattie made from free-range Black Angus cattle, which are fed a special seaweed supplement that produce up to two-thirds fewer methane emissions than regular cows. This world-first launch is revolutionising the grass fed-beef industry, leading the way for others and helping to deliver on Australia’s national emissions targets.
From February 2023, 61 restaurant locations around Australia offered their guests a Gamechanger beef upgrade to be used in any of their favourite Grill’d beef burgers for an extra $1 at the counter. The consumer response was overwhelming, with restaurants selling out of the original supply within days of launch. Grill’d now planning to introduce the Gamechanger pattie permanently to restaurants nationally, with ambitions eventually to make the Gamechanger the only form of beef burger available in all Grill’d restaurants.
